Ganagapur — Nirguna Math of Shri Narasimha Saraswati
Afzalpur Taluka · Kalaburagi District · Karnataka
Where the Bhima meets the Amarja, a Guru promised never to leave — his padukas still take the morning aarti, and at noon his monks still go door to door asking for alms.
Deval Ganagapur in Afzalpur taluk, Kalaburagi district, Karnataka, is the Nirguna Math of Shri Narasimha Saraswati — the second incarnation of Dattatreya in the Guru Charitra tradition. He is said to have stayed here some twenty-three years before departing the region, promising his devotees that he would abide at Ganagapur forever and take bhiksha at midday every day. The math houses his Nirguna Padukas — the Guru's sandals, worshipped in place of an idol as formless presence. About 2–3 km away, the Bhima and Amarja rivers meet at the Sangam, where devotees bathe at brahma-muhurta; nearby stand the Sangameshwar temple, the ancient Audumbar tree (where the Guru Charitra saptaha-parayana is still read), the Kalleshwar temple, the vibhuti ash hillock, and the Ashta-tirtha — eight holy bathing spots. The living practice of Madhukari continues daily: monks and devotees ask for alms from at least five houses, like a bee gathering nectar. The temple opens with kakad aarti around 2:30–3 AM and closes about 9:30 PM; Ganagapur Road station is ~20 km away on the Mumbai–Chennai line, and Kalaburagi airport is ~52–55 km.
A Guru who had walked the whole Deccan came to rest where two rivers meet, and before he left he made a promise: 'I will always be here.' So the people worship his sandals, not a statue — because a promise kept is stronger than stone. Every day at noon his monks go begging for food like bees gathering honey, and every dawn the river washes yesterday away. Remember Ganagapur when you make a promise: keep it the way the Guru keeps his.
