Paithan — Sant Eknath & Godavari
Godavari River Ghats · Ancient Pratishtana · Marathwada · Maharashtra
On the ancient banks of the Godavari — where holy Ganga water was offered to a dying donkey and Sanskrit was translated into everyday Marathi.
Paithan (ancient Pratishtana, capital of the Satavahanas) on the Godavari River was the historical seat of Sanskrit scholarship. Here in the 16th century, Sant Eknath Maharaj fearlessly broke social taboos by prioritizing living compassion over ritual purity, composing the timeless Eknathi Bhagavata and immortal Bharud folk songs.
Feeding the hungry before high-caste priests, and giving holy Ganga water to a parched donkey on the hot sands — Sant Eknath taught that God lives in suffering beings.
This sacred sanctuary unfolds through its kathas and rituals.
