Godavari Basin · Ahilyanagar District · Maharashtra
Where earthen lamps burned on water — the Fakir of Dwarkamai who taught that one God lives in every heart, Hindu or Muslim, rich or poor.
In Ahilyanagar district, Shirdi is the home of Shri Sai Baba (c. 1838–1918), the Fakir who sat by the Dhuni in Dwarkamai and drew all of India to a small village. He asked for two coins of faith — Shraddha and Saburi — and taught that feeding the hungry is feeding God. His Mahasamadhi on Vijayadashami 1918 turned Shirdi into one of the world's most visited pilgrimages, where Hindus and Muslims still bow together.
Shraddha and Saburi — faith and patience; a lamp lit on water teaches that devotion, not oil, is what truly burns.
