Kurte Island · Malvan Coast · Sindhudurg · Maharashtra
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's ocean citadel — stone anchored in roaring Arabian waves to protect coastal hearths and maritime freedom.
Commissioned by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1664 CE on Kurte island off Malvan, Sindhudurg is the supreme jewel of Maratha maritime architecture. Anchored on rocky ocean beds with molten lead foundations, it protected trade, defeated coastal piracy, and nurtured an indigenous naval fleet dedicated to Swarajya.
Built on Kurte rock inside the ocean waves with lead-sealed basalt — Sindhudurg reminds us that Shivaji Maharaj safeguarded the sea as fiercely as the Sahyadri mountains.
